About Sander

This blog post is… well about myself. I am not writing this because I love talking about myself or out of narcissistic tendencies. I am posting this because I have had many questions about my background in martial arts, fitness, education etc. This is a great visual way to show everyone what I’ve done since I was a child that relates to my profession now.

I have been involved with a lot of different sports (especially in college of which I don’t have any visual materials for) and always continue to learn and try new things.

History of Martial Arts

There are many reasons for the existence of martial arts; However, the most important purpose has always been self defense. Throughout history, many martial arts have progressed into more philosophical practices or cultural traditions while others incorporate training programs that focus solely on competition. Each form of martial arts has evolved tremendously throughout history and most have served its purpose well. Some have been born out of frustration that the art has forgotten about its original purpose of self defense; others have been created for monetary reasons and so on.

Martial arts have been practiced around the world for a very long time. Many forms of martial arts are so old that nobody knows who founded some of them or when and for what reason they were created. We do know that Laamb wrestling originated in Senegal, Ju Jutsu was the way for Samurai to battle (more about this in a following blog), Shaolin Kung Fu is over 1,000 years old, tombs in Egypt (approx. 2,000 BC) show highly evolved stick fighting arts, and that Judo was founded in the early 20th century. Even today, more styles are constantly evolving; think about BJJ and Mixed Martial Arts.

Unfortunately, many of the traditional martial arts have switched their focus to demonstration and spectacular movements and have forgotten about the effectiveness of their art. In other cases, the techniques are simply not cut out for the average person and require its practitioners to be full time fighters that are expected to defend themselves against unrealistic attacks from other pro fighters, which would never occur in a realistic personal attack.

Times have changed dramatically, therefore, each form of martial arts needs to evolve as well. This should be the intent of all martial artists. You are never done learning and you can always improve. That is the reason why so many martial arts have emerged. Judo, for example, evolved from Ju Jutsu, as BJJ has evolved from Judo and Ju Jutsu.

The issue of relevance is something that is central in our curriculum. That is why we have opted to create a realistic and effective syllabus of techniques. Our system focusses on a modern way of defending oneself, which means we chose all the best techniques from multiple styles and combined them while leaving the unrealistic methods out. We guarantee you will become a well rounded martial artist who can stand his/her own ground.

Our adult program has an immensely effective curriculum for everyone. You do not have to be a professional fighter to take our classes. You follow at your own pace and we will diversify to help each individual. If you have trouble with mastering a technique, we will do everything we can to help. Do you want to take it up a notch? No problem, we will be glad to teach you more intricate techniques.

Our youth program is based on a more traditional class environment with a focus on effectiveness. For example, we do not practice the traditional forms you may find elsewhere which have become completely irrelevant. Instead, we have created our own forms which contain more realistic techniques and moves which will also reoccur in partner exercises and higher grade curricula.

At Define Defense, we want to bring back the original reason why the martial arts were created: an effective way of defending yourself. You do not need to spend 4 hours a day with us to become a great fighter. We teach you all the best and diversify to meet your needs. We want you to feel good about what you do and have a blast while doing it. Come by and notice the difference!
